Most house fires start in the kitchen, from electrical faults, or from heaters and gas cylinders. A few simple habits greatly reduce the risk.
- Never leave cooking unattended
- Check gas cylinders and hoses regularly for leaks — use soapy water, never a flame
- Do not overload sockets or extension cables, and replace damaged wires
- Keep heaters at least one metre from curtains, furniture and clothes
- Keep a fire extinguisher and a fire blanket in the kitchen, and learn how to use them
- Agree with your family on how to get out of the house and where to meet
If a fire breaks out
- Get everyone out and stay out
- Call 125 from a safe place
- If there is smoke, stay low and cover your nose and mouth
- Never use water on an oil or electrical fire
In any emergency, call 125 — free, from any phone, 24 hours a day.
