Drowning can happen quickly and silently. Every summer the Civil Defence Sea Rescue Unit responds to drowning incidents along the Lebanese coast and in rivers and pools.
- Swim only in areas supervised by lifeguards, and follow their instructions and flags
- Never swim alone, after eating a heavy meal, or after drinking alcohol
- Watch children at all times near water — even shallow water and pools
- Do not swim in rough seas, at night, or far from the shore
- Avoid diving into water whose depth you do not know
- Use a life jacket on boats and for weak swimmers
- Avoid long exposure to the sun between 11 am and 4 pm, and drink plenty of water
If someone is drowning
- Call for help and call 125 immediately
- Throw something that floats (a ring, a cooler, a plastic bottle) rather than jumping in if you are not trained
- Once the person is out of the water, check their breathing and start CPR if you are trained
In any emergency, call 125 — free, from any phone, 24 hours a day.
